Though Alex Turner’s bizarre acceptance speech probably gained the most attention of the night, Arctic Monkeys’ live performance also set the stage on fire. Literally. Now Alex Turner has revealed that the pyrotechnics were at the insistence of the event organisers. During their performance of ‘R U Mine’ at Wednesday’s (19 February) Brit Awards, giant letters spelling out the band’s album title AM were set on fire. Speaking to NME, Turner admitted, “[The organisers] said, ‘Do you want to perform at the Brits?’ And the condition was we set an AM on fire.” He added, “Should people expect pyro at our shows now? I don’t think so. I’m not going to rule it out, but that was hilarious.”

One Direction star Niall Horan got stuck in a lift at a Brit Awards after-party on Wednesday. According to The Mirror, the Irish heartthrob – who attended the ceremony on crutches – found himself trapped in an elevator when trying to leave record label Sony’s bash at The Arts Club in London. The newspaper has obtained footage of the incident, where Niall can be seen looking flustered as his minders frantically tried to call for help. As well as the Midnight Memories singer, seven other party-goers were also stuck in the lift. A source said: “Security were frantically trying to get the lift working again but the emergency alarm was down and it simply wouldn’t budge. “Everyone was trapped and getting increasingly hot and bothered. Once it was eventually moving again, the management were very apologetic.” They added: “The lift was briefly closed down while repairs were made.”

David Bowie urged Scotland to “stay with us” and not vote for independence in his acceptance speech at this year’s Brit Awards. The ceremony took place at London’s O2 Arena, with Bowie winning Best International Male. However, the singer was not at the venue to pick up his award, and instead sent supermodel Kate Moss to pick up the prize on his behalf and read out his acceptance speech. Moss, who was presented with the award by Noel Gallagher, told the crowd: “David has asked me to say this: In Japanese myth, the rabbits on my old costume that Kate’s wearing live on the moon. Kate comes from Venus, and I from Mars. I’m completely delighted to have a Brit for being the best male. I think it’s a great way to end the day. Thank you very much – and Scotland, stay with us.”

Brits Show Review 2014
This year’s bash was opened by an explosive performance from The Arctic Monkeys. Featuring giant burning letters A and M and lasers galore. James Corden then took to the stage for the final time as host, letting us know what delights the evening would bring. The new Best Video Award was put to a ‘social vote’ via Twitter. During the show Twitter users could tweet who they wanted to win using the relevant hash-tag.
3rdEyeGirl and Prince took to the stage to present the award for best British Female Solo Artist, the winner was Ellie Goulding. She said she was genuinely shocked to win. Katy Perry took to the stage and performed her single Dark Horse.
The next award was for International Male Solo Artist and was presented by Kylie Minogue and Pharrell Williams. The winner was Bruno Mars who said it was an honour to be in the category. Tine Tempah and Fern Cotton took to the stage to present the award for British Breakthrough Act, the winner was Bastille who said it was “unexpected for all of us”. The next performer was Bruno Mars who sang his hit Treasure.
Lily Allen was next on stage to present the award for British Group, the winner was The Arctic Monkeys. Then Sam Smith was honoured, he collected the Critics’ Choice Award this year. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was next on stage to present the award for Global Success, the winner was One Direction who collected the award minus Harry Styles who joined them late on stage saying he was using the toilet. Next up was a sensational performance from Beyonce who sang XO.
Katy Perry was next to present an award and was presenting the award for British Single, the winner was Rudimental for their hit Waiting All Night. Disclosure and Lorde then teamed up to perform together with a mash-up of both of their big hits. Ses Fabregas and Nicole Scherzinger presented the award for International Group which was won by Daft Punk. Nile Rogers accepted the award on their behalf as the band never appears in public.
The next performer was former Critics’ Choice winner Ellie Goulding who sang an acoustic version of I Need Your Love which built into her huge number one song Burn. Noel Gallagher presented the award for British Male Solo Artist. The winner was David Bowie who wasn’t at the bash but Kate Moss collected the award on his behalf. Nick Grimshaw took to the stage next to give the award for International Female Solo Artist, the winner was Lorde who described the award as a “priceless surprise”.
Jimmy Carr came on to announce the winner of the Twitter vote for Best Video, the winner was One Direction for their song Best Song Ever. Next up on stage Bastille and Rudimental performed together as ‘Bastimental’. Emeli Sande took to the stage to announce the British Album Of The Year award winner which was Arctic Monkeys for their album AM. Alex Turner, from the band, said a very long and bizarre speech about the music genre basically culminating in the revelation that “Rock’n’Roll will never die”.
After James Corden signed off for the last time it was then time for the finale which certainly did not disappoint. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rogers took to the stage and performed a medley of hits. Starting with Get Lucky they mixed into the Chic track Good Times. Then to the massive smash hit of Pharrell’s, the track Happy.
David Bowie is being tipped for his first prize at the Brit Awards for almost two decades, with Arctic Monkeys and Ellie Goulding also among favourites for the big event. Bowie, 67, leads the field to take the best British male award at the biggest night in the UK music world after his comeback last year with album The Next Day, following an absence of 10 years. Bowie is ranked way out in front at 1/3 by bookmaker William Hill to collect the title ahead of a field made up of John Newman, Jake Bugg, Tom Odell and James Blake.

In the runup to this year’s Brit awards, the organisation’s new chairman, Christian Tattersfield, has struck a bullish, even combative note. He acknowledges that last year’s event was a pretty dull evening for all concerned – “last year could have been better … we lacked superstars… so that took a bit of the edge off”. Nevertheless, he is not a man given to fondly recalling the Brits of the past. Then it was a “shambles”, now it is “an important event of gravitas, rather than just a shoddy knees-up”. “We needed to stop the mayhem,” Tattersfield says, before offering assurances to anyone who thinks all this talk of gravitas suggests that 2014’s ceremony, heading to us on Wednesday, promises to be as dull as its predecessor. “James Corden wants to put in a performance as host that creates the excitement we all talk about. We’re saying to James, ‘Go for it – let’s all have some fun.'”

Prince’s location might have proved almost impossible to pin down of late, but one thing’s for sure – on 19 February he’ll be at the Brits. The singer, along with his band 3RDEYEGIRL, is set to present the first award of the night on Wednesday. Prince last attended the Brits eight years ago back in 2006, and has won five Brits in his illustrious career.

Great news Beyoncé fans! Queen B will perform at this year’s Brit Awards. It’s been ten years since the Drunk In Love star graced the Brit Awards with her presence, but she will definitely be there on Wednesday 19 February. She joins an already impressive performance line-up, including Katy Perry, Pharrell, Arctic Monkeys, Ellie Goulding, Lorde, Disclosure, Bastille, Bruno Mars and Rudimental.

Disclosure are up for four awards at the ceremony.

James Arthur has had another outburst on twitter, this time about not being nominated for a Brit award. The singer Tweeted “my counterparts sold less records and I’m not even considered. Politics rule the industry again”. However soon after, James tweeted to apologise blaming hackers for the previous tweet.
David Bowie won’t be appearing at next month’s Brits, despite being nominated for two gongs. Bosses were hoping the reclusive star would make a triumphant return to the ceremony, 30 years after he picked up his first award for Best Male. But David is certain to be a no-show on February 19th and won’t even record a video acceptance speech should he win.

Pop acts Bastille and Disclosure lead the nominations at the 2014 Brit Awards, in a field that leans heavily towards new bands. Both acts have four nominations, followed closely by pop star Ellie Goulding and dance collective Rudimental, who have three each. Two-time Brit winner David Bowie is up for best British male and best album, while Arctic Monkeys also get two nods. The Sheffield band will open the awards ceremony on 19 February. Other acts scheduled to perform at the show include Bastille, Bruno Mars, up for best international male, and Rudimental. The dance act, whose three nominations include British group, have spent the last year investing in their own live show and are “excited” to perform at the awards. Katy Perry, who competes in the international female category after last year’s global hit Roar, will also take to the stage on the night.

The Brit Awards 2014 could be about to get a bit more fierce as reports suggest Beyoncé could perform on the night. According to The Sun, bosses are trying to get the XO singer to take to the stage at the bash next month – despite Queen B pulling out of last year’s show. It is thought that Bey called time on her performance at the bash in 2013 as her new material wasn’t ready.

Capitol-signed Sam Smith has won the BRIT Awards 2014 Critics’ Choice gong, with Ella Eyre and Chlöe Howl as runner-ups. The 21-year-old singer/songwriter came to public attention this year after featuring on Disclosure’s big breakout hit last autumn ‘Latch’. He went on to work with Naughty Boy on the global smash hit No. 1 single ‘La La La’. This was followed by the release of his critically acclaimed solo EP ‘Nirvana’. Three artists have been shortlisted for this year’s Brit Critics’ Choice award, won last year by singer Tom Odell. Chloe Howl, Ella Eyre and Sam Smith are in the running with the winner to be announced on Thursday 12 December. Howl has been compared with Lily Allen, while former Brit school student Eyre scored a number one as the vocalist on Rudimental’s Waiting All Night. La, La, La, Smith’s collaboration with producer Naughty Boy, also reached number one in the UK singles chart. Eyre, who has also collaborated with indie-pop act Bastille, said it was “overwhelming” to be nominated for a Brit, adding: “Two years ago I was at The Brit Awards on a school trip, and to be considered now is crazy!”

Hat designer Philip Treacy is creating the winners’ trophy for next year’s Brit Awards, organisers have announced. Treacy has made memorable headwear for music stars including Lady Gaga, Madonna and Grace Jones. He said his inspiration for the 2014 trophy “comes from a uniquely British genre of music: Punk”. The music awards ceremony, which will feature James Corden as presenter for the final time, takes place at London’s O2 Arena on 19 February.

James Corden will host his fifth and final Brit Awards ceremony next year. The star of Sky 1’s A League Of Their Own will bow out after the show on February 19 as the longest serving presenter of the annual event. Corden, recently seen portraying singer Paul Potts in the movie One Chance, presented the event on three previous occasions on his own, and in 2009 he hosted the music bash with Mathew Horne and Kylie Minogue. “I really love the Brits. I’m such a fan. I’ll miss not doing it after this one but fully intend to enjoy every second of Brits 2014,” he said. Next year’s show – to be staged at the O2 Arena in London – will feature appearances by acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Katy Perry.

James Corden has suggested it may be time for the Brit Awards to find a “younger and better looking” host after next year’s ceremony. The comedian, 35, has been the face of the event for the last three years, and while he still loves the show, he’s admitted he’ll probably move on soon. He said: “I really love it, I’m such a fan. I think if I do it, it’ll be the last time I do. “It’s probably time to hand it over to someone younger and better looking.” James isn’t even confirmed to return as host yet. If he does sign up for another year, he would equal Chris Evans’ record as longest-serving Brits hosts – and he’d want to bring back the sense that anything can happen.

James Corden is being rumoured to host the 2014 BRIT Awards ceremony – marking the fourth time that he has presented the event. The Sun newspaper reports that Corden is ‘in talks’ with organisers and wanted to know more about the musical line-up of the evening before agreeing to anything. ‘A source’ apparently told the paper: ““It would be the obvious thing for James to bow out with the ratings success under his belt. But instead he has made it clear he wants to finish on a belter of a show. “The last awards was gentle and the live acts a bit flat, so he’s asked what the new man in charge has up his sleeve.” This year’s BRIT Awards attracted their highest ratings in their 30-year history, but the winners, line-up and the choice of Corden as host divided opinion among viewers and critics.
