South London grime superstar Stormzy beat Ed Sheeran to the main prizes in a surprise result at the Brit Awards. Stormzy, who seemed overwhelmed when he won best British male and best British album for Gang Signs and Prayer, also closed the show and criticised the PM’s handling of the Grenfell tragedy. Sheeran didn’t go home empty-handed – he was given the global success award. Dua Lipa won best British female and the breakthrough award, while Gorillaz were named best British group.
But the night belonged to Stormzy, who held his head in his hands as he walked to the stage to accept best male, and fell to the ground when he was named winner of British album. He told the crowd Gang Signs And Prayer was “the hardest thing” he had done and gave “all the glory to God”.
Ed Sheeran had the biggest commercial success of 2017, but won’t have begrudged Stormzy his wins – before the ceremony, he said he wanted the Croydon rapper to win best album. “I think he made the album of the year, personally,” Sheeran told BBC 5 live. The pair performed together at last year’s show on a remix of Shape Of You.
Dua Lipa, the 22-year-old British-Kosovan pop singer, was the only other artist to walk away with two awards at the ceremony, in London’s O2 Arena. In one of the night’s most touching moments, she took her younger brother and sister on stage as she accepted her award for best breakthrough and told them, with millions watching: “I love you.”
She was one of many artists who wore white roses or rose badges on the red carpet as a mark of support for the Time’s Up and Me Too movements. Ellie Goulding, who presented best international female, had a dig at the Grammy Awards and their boss Neil Portnow, who said women needed to “step up” in the music industry. The British star said: “We’re very proud to be women and I think we can all agree we’ve been stepping up for years.”
Meanwhile, in a poignant tribute to the victims of last May’s Manchester Arena attack, Liam Gallagher performed a rendition of Oasis hit Live Forever, accompanied by cello and acoustic guitar. He was introduced by fellow Mancunian Gary Barlow, who paid tribute to the 22 “innocent, music-loving people” who lost their lives. Ariana Grande had been due to perform that section of the show, but was unable to travel to London “on doctor’s orders”.
Gorillaz were named best British group and their leader Damon Albarn used his acceptance speech to send a message about Brexit. “This country is – believe it or not – quite a small, little thing, right, but it’s a lovely place and it’s part of a beautiful world,” he said. “But what I want to say is, don’t let it become isolated, don’t let yourselves become cut off. “Considering our size we do incredible things in music, we’ve got a real spirit and a real soul and don’t let politics get in the way.”

Ariana Grande pulled out of performing a tribute to victims of the Manchester bombing at the Brits due to illness. The singer was due perform in memory of the those affected by the attack – which took place at her concert. Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the Brit Awards, said she was unable to travel “on doctor’s orders”. Ariana later posted on her Instagram story a video of Liam Gallagher performing Live Forever in tribute. Twenty two people died in the bombing at Manchester Arena on 22 May. “We think it’s really important to recognise that terrible atrocity and the impact on so many lives so I can confirm we did have Ariana Grande lined up to make a performance tonight,” Geoff said.

Many music stars turned up to the Brit Awards wearing or carrying white roses as a mark of support for the Time’s Up and Me Too movements. Dua Lipa, who has five nominations, and Ed Sheeran, who’s up for four awards, were among those who displayed roses. But Paloma Faith told BBC News: “The only thing I’m upset about tonight is not more men carrying white roses. I think they should have.” She pinned a rose to a member of rock group Royal Blood on the red carpet. Faith explained: “I put a white rose on one of them, which I think is really important. Because I think men should support.” Performers first adopted the white rose at this month’s Grammy Awards as a symbol of solidarity with victims of harassment and abuse.

Bauer Media has announced a cross-platform broadcast and social strategy for the BRIT Awards. Live at the Brits will involved a multi-brand radio broadcast, hosted by Kiss presenter Tom Green. There will also be social live red carpet broadcasts, hosted by Kiss presenter Pandora and Heat presenter Emily Segal across 20 Bauer Facebook and Twitter profiles. Kiss Group programme director Andy Roberts said: “Consumer needs have rapidly evolved and this strategy of radio and social broadcasts, complimented by on-demand, are designed to grow engagement and reach as wide an audience as possible with highly desired content from one of the world’s biggest music events.” The social media shows will be broadcast across Bauer brands KISS, heat, Key 103, Radio City, Metro, Forth 1, Clyde 1, Hallam FM, The Hits, Northsound, Radio Aire, Rock FM, Tay FM, Viking FM, MFR, West FM, Cool FM, Gem 106, Free Radio and Wave 105. The radio shows will be broadcast simultaneously on Bauer brands KISS, heat and the Bauer City Network including Key 103, Hallam FM, Metro, Aire, Forth, Clyde, Free, Gem and The Hits, with highlights also broadcast on Absolute Radio and featured on Heatworld. After the broadcasts, on-demand content will be available online and will feature exclusive interviews with award nominees and celebrities.

Every star attending next week’s Brit Awards will be given a white rose pin in support of the #TimesUp campaign. The show’s organisers wrote to the head of every UK record label on Wednesday to inform them of the plan. The letter says performers, presenters and guests will be given a pin “as a symbol of solidarity, which we invite them to wear, if they so choose”. Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Paloma Faith are among the artists expected to lend their support. The Time’s Up movement works to combat sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry. Performers first adopted the white rose as a symbol of solidarity with victims of abuse at this month’s Grammy Awards.

Paloma Faith has called out the BRIT Awards for the lack of female performers currently booked at to perform at the ceremony. The 2018 awards takes place on February 21, and will see the likes of Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters, Rag’n’Bone Man, Sam Smith, and Stormzy perform. Dua Lipa is the only woman set to appear at present. While speaking to The Mirror, Faith was asked if it was a good time to be a woman. She replied: “That’s what they keep telling us, but it looks like all men performing again except for one woman at the BRITs.”

Dua Lipa leads the charge at this year’s Brit Awards with five nominations, including best album. The pop star, whose single New Rules was one of last year’s breakout hits, is also up for best female, best video, best single and breakthrough. The 22-year-old also makes Brits history. Until now, no female artist has ever received five nominations in a single year. “How is this real?” she tweeted as the shortlists were announced. Ed Sheeran also fared well, with four nominations, while J Hus and Rag’n’Bone Man scored three apiece. All four artists are up for best British album, as is Stormzy for his debut record, Gang Signs and Prayer. One notable absence from this year’s shortlist was Sam Smith. His album, The Thrill Of It All, was the third biggest seller of 2017 but received no nominations. However, its November release date means it will be eligible again next year – and Smith will perform at this year’ ceremony, at London’s O2 Arena on 21 February, along with Rag’n’Bone Man, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran.

Foo Fighters have been confirmed as a live performer at The BRIT Awards 2018. The Dave Grohl-led band, who are four-time BRIT Award-winners, will play at the celebrated ceremony for the very first time next month, with this year’s awards show due to take place at The O2 in London on February 21. The Foos join Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Stormzy as confirmed performers at The BRIT Awards 2018, with Grohl remarking that the UK had always been good to the band. “How the f**k have we never played at The BRIT Awards before!?!?!” he said. Jack Whitehall has already been confirmed as the host of The BRIT Awards 2018, with the ceremony – the 38th in its history – set to be broadcast live on ITV.

Jack Whitehall is to host the Brit Awards for the first time next year. The comedian takes over from Dermot O’Leary and Emma Willis, who shared hosting duties earlier this year. Brit Awards chairman Jason Iley said Whitehall would bring his “enormous enthusiasm, charisma, fun and passion” to the annual music ceremony. The show, to be held at London’s O2 Arena on 21 February, will celebrate the biggest and best pop stars of 2017. The panel will start voting on Friday. Whitehall is known for sitcoms like Fresh Meat, Bounty Hunters and Bad Education and for his appearances on TV panel shows. He said he was “thrilled” to be master of ceremonies, describing the event as “the kind of show you dream of hosting as a kid, so [I’m] really excited to have been asked”.

R&B singer Jorja Smith has won the Brits Critics’ Choice award, singling her out as one to watch next year. The 20-year-old, who comes from Walsall in the West Midlands, beat two other newcomers, Mabel and Stefflon Don, to the prize. The award, which recognises “the future stars of British recording talent”, has previously gone to Adele, Emeli Sande and last year’s winner, Rag N Bone Man. “This is such a special way to end the year,” said Smith. The singer, who took fourth place on the BBC Sound of 2017, was working in a Starbucks less than two years ago when she posted her first single, Blue Lights, on SoundCloud.

Before they were famous, Sam Smith, Florence + The Machine, Adele and Emeli Sande were all tipped for success by the Brits’ Critics’ Choice award. This year’s line-up has just been announced and, for the first time, it’s an all-female field. Birmingham-born MC Stefflon Don is joined on the list by soul singers Jorja Smith and Mabel. The winner will be announced on 4 December, ahead of next year’s Brit Awards.

The date for next year’s Brit Awards has been announced, and it’s set to take place in its usual mid-February slot. The ceremony, which this year saw performances from the likes of Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran, will take place on Wednesday, February 21. “We’re super excited to announce that The #BRITs 2018 will take place on 21 February 2018?, a Twitter announcement revealed.
