Former The Spice Girls star Mel B is reportedly being lined up to replace Tulisa on the 2013 series of the X Factor. The singer was a guest judge on the 2012 series and is currently a judge on the Australian version of the hit talent show, but according to a tabloid source she is set to pack in her life in Australia and return to the UK for the show. An insider told The Mirror: “She’s ready to come back. All her obligations in Australia, where she’s been living for two years, come to completion at the end of January. Phoenix really wants to be in the UK and Mel’s getting signs that things are going to work out with The X Factor. The thing about Mel is she goes where she’s wanted and where the work is. And if that’s the UK then so be it.”

Christopher Maloney has now been confirmed for next year’s X Factor live tour. It had been reported that despite finishing third on this year’s show, Maloney would be kicked off the jaunt after missing the group performance on the final Sunday and his falling-out with fellow contestant Carolynne Poole. James Arthur, Union J, Rylan Clark and Ella Henderson later posted messages on Twitter suggesting that Kye Sones, who was voted off in week five, should join the tour.

Simon Cowell could reportedly schedule next year’s series of The X Factor directly against Strictly Come Dancing. The Syco boss allegedly believes that he could boost flagging ratings by placing the 2013 edition in an earlier, family friendly timeslot of 7pm, which would see it clash with its BBC rival. According to the Daily Mail, Cowell will meet with ITV executives to discuss the future of The X Factor – which is contracted for only one more year under its current deal – in January. Cowell is also said to have offered a “huge pay rise” to judge Nicole Scherzinger in order to secure her for next year’s X Factor. However, the fates of panellists Tulisa Contostavlos and Gary Barlow are said to be “uncertain”, as Cowell contemplates a ‘back to basics’ revamp for the next series.

Christopher Maloney could be dropped from The X Factor tour, according to the latest reports. The controversial contestant, who finished third in the competition over the weekend, was apparently kicked out of the final group performance last night after turning up late for rehearsals. He allegedly appeared to have been drinking alcohol and went on to verbally abuse production staff because he only had one line in the performance. Several reports claim that he called fellow contestant Carolynne Poole a “c**t” and stormed out of the studio. Producers confirmed he had chosen to go back to Liverpool, but he later turned up at the studio and pleaded to be included in the performance. His request was declined.

Next the finalists sang a track with their mentors. Jahmene and James sang with Nicole and Christopher sang with Gary. The next guest performance was courtesy of Rita Ora. Then the phone lines were frozen and as the votes were counted there was a guest performance from Kylie Minogue. Then the act with the fewest public votes needed to go home and Dermot revealed that act was Christopher. Jahmene and James are the final two and the winner will be revealed on Sunday’s show.
Nicole Scherzinger has hinted that she may decide to quit The X Factor. The former Pussycat Doll joined the judging panel for the current ITV series, but has said that she hasn’t decided whether or not to return in 2013. “I’m really glad I did the show,” Scherzinger is quoted as saying in The Sun. “I don’t know if I’ll come back next year. The X Factor’s James Arthur has found himself embroiled in a Twitter spat with controversial comedian Frankie Boyle. The singer rose to the bait after Boyle tweeted an insult about him over the weekend. He wrote: “James McArthur is like a cross between a tramp and a duckling #xfactor” To which James replied: “Poor old man making yet more s**t jokes about Xfactor because he knows that’s the only way he can get attention any more #prat” And Boyle countered: “I think if I wanted attention I’d sing covers on a talent show, inked up like a schooldesk in a remedial class.” But the talent show hopeful had the last word, responding: “Your about as funny as aids. “Your a sad man and I can’t wait to see you coz it’s about time someone gave you a reality check.”

Semi Finals Results – In Review
The semi-final results show started with the finalists singing a Christmas song together and they were joined by Rod Stewart. X Factor judge Tulisa then sang her new single. Pink also made her X Factor debut and sang her new single. Then it was time for the results and this week the judges had no say in it, the act with the fewest public votes would go home. It was revealed that Union J were going home and they sang for one last time. So Christopher, James and Jahmene are through to the final in Manchester next weekend.
Semi Finals – In Review
This week’s semi-final, and the last show this series to take place from the London studios, saw the finalists sing two songs each. Their first track had to be a song that meant something special to them and their second had to be a song that they think would see them through to the final. From this week the judges have lost control of the outcome and only the public vote will decide who is going home. James was once again exceptional and got all good comments from the judges. Jahmene’s first song was very emotional and had Nicole in floods of tears. After his second song all of the judges said he was Jah-mazing. Union J did well although Tulisa and Gary both said they had played it safe with their second choice of songs. Chris got all good comments after his first song but Tulisa said his second song wasn’t his strongest performance and Louis said it was karaoke. On Sunday’s results show the public votes alone will decide who goes through to next weekends final.
Gary Barlow will reportedly sing with Christopher Maloney on The X Factor final. The Take That star will perform a duet with his last remaining act on Saturday, December 8, should Maloney make it past the semi-finals. Producers are said to have struggled to secure a leading pop act to duet with Maloney, following the likes of Rihanna, Robbie Williams and Beyoncé in the past. “Christopher has never been in the bottom two before and bosses are working on the likelihood that he will be in the final – and this has caused a real headache for them,” a source told The Sun.

The single released by this year’s winner of The X Factor will also be this year’s charity song, raising money for a children’s charity. In previous years a separate track has been recorded by the finalists as a charity single. The song, which has yet to be announced, will be performed by the last two acts in the competition before being released after the winner is revealed, as usual. Syco will donate 100% of the profits. That is thought to amount to about 20p for each download and £1 for each CD purchased. The charity which will benefit is called Together for Short Lives, which provides support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

One Direction and Emeli Sandé will perform on The X Factor final, it has been confirmed. The boyband, who finished third in 2010, have made several appearances on this year’s show following their global success. Sandé also performed ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ with Labrinth a few weeks back, and her songs, particularly ‘Read All About It (Part III)’, have featured prominently throughout the competition. Union J, Jahmene Douglas, Christopher Maloney and James Arthur remain on The X Factor and will battle it out for a place in the December 8 final this weekend. Dermot O’Leary will host this year’s final in front of 12,000 fans at Manchester Central. More guest acts are expected to be announced soon.

Quarter Finals Results- In Review
This week’s results show started with the finalists singing Viva La Vida. The guest performers this week were Bruno Mars and Rihanna, both singing there respective latest singles. Then it was results time and in the bottom two this week were Rylan and Union J. After a very impressive sing-off the judges had to decide who to send through to the semi-final. Nicole and Louis both chose to save their acts. Gary, of course, opted to send home Rylan but was very respectful about it. So Tulisa had to decide whether to send home Rylan or send it to dead-lock and she chose to send home Rylan and he has left the competition.
Quarter Finals – In Review
This week was the X Factor quarter final and the acts had to sing two songs each. Their first song had to be an Abba track and their second tracks were a Motown classic. Jahmene had another great week although Gary thought his first song was rushed. James also had a fantastic night and Louis said he had the best vocals of the night. Rylan was as camp and predictable as ever. Gary did say he respected him for making it through to week eight and Louis didn’t like his second song. Union J sounded great and Tulisa said their vocals were on point although Gary said they could have been more creative with their second song. Chris had fairly bad comments from all judges and Nicole said his first track was a snoozer. Gary didn’t take to kindly to the negative comments. The results will be revealed on Sunday’s show.
Simon Cowell is reportedly planning a major shake-up for The X Factor next year – with the biggest change being the publication of voting figures each week. A similar move has already been trialled on the US version of the show, where a league table is revealed in each results show. And a source told The Sun: “If the viewers knew popular acts like Ella and James Arthur were pulling in low numbers of votes it would encourage them to pick up the phone”.

Ella Henderson has revealed that Tulisa Contostavlos blamed herself over her act’s X Factor exit. The 16-year-old departed the ITV competition after she and James Arthur unexpectedly fell in the bottom two. “I think she felt like she was to blame,” Henderson told The Sun. “I was her last remaining girl and she threw everything into me. She just felt bad on my behalf.” Insiders have also claimed that Tulisa’s love life may have had a negative effect on her act. She has recently started a relationship with Newcastle United footballer Danny Simpson. “While the focus has been on Tulisa and Danny, it has meant less attention on Ella,” a source said.

Following the shock exit of Tulisa’s act Ella Henderson on Sunday, Maloney has been subjected to abuse on the social-networking site, with The Metro reporting how one user wrote: “CHRISTOPHER MALONEY KILL YOURSELF.” Another tweeted: “Oh my god I feel to cry. I’m gobsmacked. Christopher maloney I will kill you in ur sleep.” It seems Christopher himself has had enough of the abuse, with the 34-year old taking to Twitter earlier today to confirm his hiatus from the site. He wrote: “Ello guys, taking a break from twitter for a bit, need to concentrate on my songs for this week. Ope u understand, thanks 4 ur support. Xx.”

Seventh Results Show – In Review
This week’s results show started with the finalists singing Tulisa’s hit Young. Then Xtra Factor host, and former contestant, Olly Murs sang his latest single. Alicia Keys also performed her new single. Then it was time for the all important public vote results. In the bottom two this week was, shockingly, Ella and James. The audience boo’ed as Rylan and Christopher made it through. After an emotional sing-off the judges had the difficult job of choosing who to send home. A very angry Tulisa saved her act and sent home James, Nicole saved her act and sent home Ella. Louis chose to send home James and Gary chose to send home Ella. Gary once again criticised the fact that good singers are going in favour of people that can’t sing. As no majority decision was made it went to Dead-Lock and back to the public vote. The act with the least votes was Ella and she has left the competition leaving Tulisa with no acts left.
Seventh Live Show – In Review
The theme of this weeks show was guilty pleasures. Dermot opened the show and opened the phone lines and the contestants then sang. Stand out performances this week were courtesy of Jahmene and Ella although Nicole didn’t like Ella’s song choice. James had another good week and Gary even said he would like him to win the whole series. Union J had quite a good week as did Christopher and he had good comments from all the judges, albeit grudgingly. Rylan was up to his usual camp tricks. Gary still isn’t a fan and Tulisa wasn’t so keen on him either this week. The results show on Sunday will feature Olly Murs and Alicia Keys.
Jahmene Douglas has caused chaos on The X Factor after refusing to sing Katy Perry’s Last Friday Night for the group song on Sunday night’s show. The teetotal 20-year-old has said he doesn’t want to sing Katy’s smash hit because it glorifies drinking alcohol. The lyrics include: “Last Friday night. Yeah, we danced on table tops. And we took too many shots. Think we kissed but I forgot.” Jahmene’s refusal has meant that X Factor producers have had to come up with another idea for the six remaining acts to perform.

However, he said that he would only join if former manager Louis Walsh remained on the panel. “Being on The X Factor judging panel would be an amazing gig and something I would thoroughly enjoy,” he told The Sun. “I would hate to replace Louis Walsh. That would never be my intention.”

Sixth Results Show – In Review
This week’s results show began with the finalists singing Beautiful Day. One of this weeks guest performers were, last year’s winners, Little Mix who performed their new single. Ed Sheeran also sang his new single. Then it was time for the results which revealed that both boybands Union J and District 3 were in the bottom two. After the sing-off it was over to the judges to decide who to send home. Louis refused to vote and choose between his own acts. Gary and Nicole both decided to send home District 3 which meant they had the majority vote and are out of the competition. Dermot did ask Tulisa who she would have chosen and she said she would have saved District 3.
Sixth Live Show – In Review
The theme this week was Best Of British where the acts were singing songs from some of Britain’s finest musicians. It started with Gary telling off the host Dermot who asked him why he thinks his act Christopher has had bad press again. Gary told him off for always doing Christopher down and not Rylan. The phone lines were opened and the contest began. Outstanding performances this week came courtesy of Jahmene, Ella and once again James. District 3 had a better week and showed off their harmonies although Gary said the other band Union J have the edge on them. Union J also had a good week and dedicated their performance to the armed forces. They got good comments from the judges but Tulisa said she is worried it is the battle of the boybands between them and District 3. Christopher got bad comments from all the judges, except his mentor. Louis and Nicole said he is a karaoke singer and Tulisa said people wouldn’t buy his music. Rylan was clearly the weakest singer again this week but put on highly camp collection of Spice Girls tracks. The evening was rounded off by a performance from former contestants One Direction. The results will be revealed on Sundays show.
She might have left The X Factor because of an illness, but Lucy Spraggan’s still got an opportunity to rejoin the stars of this year’s show, as she’s been offered a spot on the upcoming live tour. Acts confirmed for the nationwide tour include Jahmene Douglas, James Arthur, Ella Henderson, Christopher Maloney, Union J and District 3. And Lucy’s bezzie Rylan Clark is set to make an appearance, too! Each of the acts are set to make a whopping £100,000 from going on the 18-show tour, but Lucy can decide whether or not she wants to go depending on how she feels.

Louis Walsh has revealed that he wants Simon Cowell to return to The X Factor. The TV judge said that the executive producer’s return to the competition will bring much higher ratings for the show. The X Factor’s ratings have suffered a dip in the last two years, following Cowell’s exit in order to front the USA edition on Fox. “If Simon did come back, he’d have the number one show,” Walsh told The Sun. “That’s the thing about Simon — he always wants to be number one. “We need him in the building, he’s always fun, he keeps everybody on their toes. I wish he’d come back.” Walsh added that Cowell has asked staff members to work harder on the show, saying: “Simon doesn’t want anybody to be complacent.”

Fifth Results Show – In Review
This week’s results show started with the finalists singing Good Time. The guest artists this week were Rita Ora and No Doubt. Then it was results time. In the bottom two this week was Rylan and Kye. It is fair to say that both acts gave it everything in the sing-off but the judges had to send somebody home. Nicole and Gary obviously decided to save their own acts. Louis said he would do the “right thing” and send home Rylan. Tulisa had the deciding vote and decided to sent home Kye. So it was a draw so it went to Dead-Lock, where the act with the fewest public votes is sent home. That act was Kye and he has left the competition.
Strictly Come Dancing has trounced rival talent show X Factor in the most recent round of Saturday night ratings, by some two million viewers. The BBC dance show, which aired from 18:30-20:15 GMT, pulled in an average of 9.8m viewers – while X Factor drew an average of 7.8m. It marks Strictly’s biggest lead over X Factor in six years, although there was no direct overlap in broadcast times. X Factor, which aired from 20:20-22:05, was also down 2m on the same 2011 show.

Tonight’s theme was Number Ones. After opening the phone lines Dermot announced that Lucy has decided to “withdraw” from the competition as she is still too unwell to perform. Stand out performances this week were James and Union J, who were in the bottom two last week. Rylan brought the usual chaos and all the judges, except Gary, liked it. Kye and Jahmene did well again this week. Ella did well but Gary thought the song was too high for her voice. Chris had a better week although Louis felt he would never be “international” and Tulisa said he was good but five weeks too late. District 3 seemed to struggle with their vocals this week and the judges didn’t let it go un-noticed. Gary said it was bland, Tulisa said they looked awkward and Nicole said they are better than that. The results will be revealed on Sunday night, as ever.
Lucy Spraggan has announced this morning that she is dropping out of The X Factor. The singer-songwriter missed last week’s show through sickness and has now confirmed via the show’s official Twitter feed that she won’t be appearing again. She said: “I am gutted not to be able to continue on this journey. To accept another free pass having missed last weekend would not be fair on the others in the competition. I wish them all well. “I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has supported me. There is no way that this setback will prevent me from fulfilling my ambition. You’ll be hearing from me again very soon.”

The results show started tonight with the finalists all singing a cover of the Usher track Without You. The fist guest performance was courtesy of Fun who sang their huge hit We Are Young. Robbie Williams was the second guest who sang his new single Candy and also gave Louis an impromptu lap-dance. It was then time for the results. In the bottom two this week was Union J and Jade. After the sing-off it was over to the judges to decide who would leave. A teary Louis chose to save his act Union J and Tulisa chose to save her act Jade. Then both Nicole and Gary both chose to send home Jade so she had to leave the competition for good.

The theme this week was a Halloween special called Fright Night. The judges were suitably dressed for the occasion. Dermot announced the opening of the phone lines and then it was confirmed that Lucy would not be performing this week as she was unwell, and she will automatically go through to next week’s show. Stand out performances this week were from James, Jahmene and Kye who was back on form, although Louis wasn’t impressed by him this week. Union J did ok but Gary and Tulisa though they played it safe. All the judges loved Ella except Nicole who didn’t seem keen at all. Chris caused a stir when Tulisa told Gary to stop doing the same thing with him, to which Gary said “I don’t know what offends me the most, what you said or your fag-ash breath”. He later apologised on the X-tra Factor. Rylan was as, err, entertaining as ever and Gary still isn’t keen but accepted that Rylan is hugely popular back stage with the other acts. The judges were more critical of Jade this week. Nicole and Gary didn’t like District 3 and thought they had taken a step back. Even their mentor Louis agreed they weren’t as good as last week. The results will be revealed on Sundays show.
Lucy Spraggan will not take part in this week’s X Factor live shows. The ‘Tea and Toast’ singer fell ill earlier this week and show bosses made the decision today (October 26) not to include her in the performance lineup. “NEWS: @lspraggan is just too unwell to perform on tonight’s #xfactor,” tweeted the official X Factor account, before adding: “Lucy will proceed to next weekend’s show as happened with @diana_music [past contestant Diana Vickers].” Spraggan, who is reportedly suffering from “severe flu”, was last seen in public on Wednesday night (October 24), when she attended fellow contestant Rylan Clark’s Halloween-themed birthday party dressed as a pumpkin.

On Friday (October 26), the contestant missed a masterclass with Robbie Williams after he fled the premises and caught a train back to his home town. According to The Sun, the wildcard entry slipped out of the London hotel where he was staying with fellow acts on Thursday (October 25). He made his way to Euston before catching a train back to Liverpool, where he was said to be visiting his grandmother. The singer was reportedly feeling the pressure after being heavily criticised for his “cheesy” rendition of Boy Meets Girl’s ‘Waiting for a Star to Fall’ on last week’s show.

The Middlesbrough-born singer performed a cover of the pop track on Saturday’s live show. However, fans of the show have been quick to point out that Arthur’s take on the LMFAO song is not as original as first thought and that the song was first performed in that style by a musician who uploads covers of pop songs to YouTube under the name Only1Noah. James Arthur has not tried to hide his inspiration too much though, Tweeting Noah after his performance to say: “Thx for the inspiration Noah! @Xfactoruk team loved ur version & asked me to put a spin on ur spin.”

This week’s results show started with the finalists singing ‘Ain’t Nobody’. Then Labrinth sang his new single with Emeli Sande called Beneath Your Beautiful. Then JLS took to the stage to perform their new single Hottest Girl In The World. Then the results were revealed and the bottom two this week was Kye and MK1. After the sing-off the judges had to choose who to send home. Louis chose to save his act and send home Kye and Gary chose to save his act and send home MK1. Nicole chose to send home MK1 and Tulisa chose to send home Kye. So it was down to dead-lock again. The act with the fewest public votes and sent home were MK1. Next weeks show has a Halloween theme.
Third Live Show – In Review
The theme of this week’s show was Club Classics. Dermot opened the show by once again opening the phone lines as viewers can now vote straight away. Stand out performances this week were courtesy of James, Kye, Ella and Jahmene, who got extremely emotional during the judges comments. Tulisa got very angry with Gary when he told Jahmene that he looked clumsy trying to dance. Union J had a good night although Gary said he would like to see more harmony from them and Nicole said their performance lacked energy. Chris was criticised for being cheesy by Nicole and Tulisa this week. Lucy did well again, incorporating some of her own lyrics into a classic song. Jade didn’t do badly, considering she had been on voice rest for a bad throat for most of the week, but it didn’t stop Louis criticising her performance though. MK1 sang a mash-up of two songs which split the judges. The general consensus was that the second part of the mash-up wasn’t too good. District 3 have upped their game, after being in the bottom two last week, and did a very lively club classic. Rylan camped it up as usual and the judges once again said he is entertaining but hasn’t got a strong vocal. Gary told him for every week that he stays, someone talented is sent home. The result will be revealed on Sunday’s show.
X Factor contestant Christopher Maloney has hit back at claims that he is faking his nerves. An unnamed finalist was recently quoted as saying he “could not be any more different off camera” and “is actually quite big-headed”, while eliminated singer Carolynne Poole said she was “surprised” to see a “confident, bold” Maloney suddenly become nervous on stage. “It’s extremely tough this week,” Maloney told journalists including Digital Spy. “There’s stuff being written about us in the papers, like things I’ve done in my past. I’ve never lied about it. I’ve [worked] on a cruise ship that lasted six weeks. “It’s just a bit negative. It’s hurtful and they’re saying hurtful things about my family. It’s part and parcel I guess, but I’ve still got feelings. It’s not that I’m upset, it’s just you can’t really defend yourself when you’re in this position.

The pair were seen laughing and stumbling along a pavement at around 4am, after spending the night at the G-A-Y nightclub, reports The Sun. Spraggan is also seen picking up her fellow finalist as they returned to their hotel, while also tripping up and falling over on the side of the road. They also stopped a bus and reportedly attempted to rip off its windscreen wipers. A witness said: “They were absolutely wasted. She hit him on the head with a cleaning sign then he dumped her on a pile of bricks, where she got stuck. “Next they stopped the bus, but show staff caught up and dragged them back to the hotel.”

Strictly Come Dancing has beaten The X Factor in the ratings by more than a million viewers. Nearly 10m tuned in to watch the show on BBC One on Saturday night. On ITV1, 8.8m watched artists including James Arthur, Ella Henderson and Rylan Clark sing for the X Factor judges. That figure includes the viewers of catch up channel ITV1+1. Traditionally The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing have been pitted against each other in a ratings battle. In the past audiences have protested when the two shows have been scheduled at the same time.

Second Results Show – In Review
The second live results show started with a performance from all of the finalists as they sang a version of Somebody That I Used To Know. There were then guest performances from, former contestant, Rebecca Ferguson and Taylor Swift. Then it was down to business. Dermot revealed who was through to next week and the bottom two were District 3 and Melanie Masson. Both acts sang well in the sing-off and it was over to the judges to decide whom to send home. Louis had to choose first and chose to save his act and send home Melanie. Tulisa chose to send home Melanie and Gary chose to save his act and send home District 3. Nicole had the deciding vote and chose to send home District 3. So it was a draw and it went to Dead-Lock for a second week. It was back to the public vote and the act with the fewest votes and sent home was Melanie Masson. Gary has now lost two acts in two weeks.
Second Live Show – In Review
The theme of the second live show was Love & Heartbreak. Stand out performances this week were brought by Jade, Ella, James and Melanie. Also doing well this week were Jahmene and Lucy. Union J did much better than last week and that was reflected in the judge’s comments. The judges loved the harmonies of the other boyband District 3 except Gary who really didn’t seem to enjoy the performance. The judges were split on Chris and MK1 this week. Kye did well but the judges didn’t give great comments saying there seemed to be something missing. Rylan got his revenge on Gary this week by pretending to sing his song Back For Good but then scrapped it for mega-mix of cheesy hits. The judges agreed it was entertaining but Gary, once again, pointed out that he can’t sing.
Fuming Gary Barlow has threatened to quit X Factor if a similar shambles to Sunday’s deadlock drama ever happens again.
The Take That singer, 41, summoned host Dermot O’Leary and show chiefs to an emergency meeting to discuss his ultimatum last night. The head judge is said to want to “put a stop to tricks” and end “pantomime” on the show. Barlow is on the warpath after Louis Walsh appeared to take guidance from ITV supremo Richard Holloway in Sunday’s live show. Louis, 60, bottled the obvious decision to send Rylan Clark home — and left it to a phone vote which cruelly ended angel-voiced Carolynne Poole’s hopes. Last night, 48 hours after walking off in protest at Rylan’s stay of execution, Barlow met ITV boss Elaine Beddell and X Factor executive producers O’Leary and Holloway for showdown talks. Show bosses had been under the impression that Gary would walk off the show. But The Sun can reveal he will return this weekend, on the condition that his demands are met. An X Factor source said: “Gary is fiercely proud of his reputation and signed up for the show because he wanted to nurture genuine talent. The reason he wanted to be on it was to put a stop to these tricks and to stop insulting the artists and viewers. “The pantomime some of his fellow judges bring to the show drives him insane and he believes it undermines the credibility of the whole show. Sunday’s antics infuriated him. He was livid.

The X Factor favourite Ella Henderson is allegedly dating Union J star, George Shelley. According to The Sun, the 16-year old has become “inseparable” from her rival contestant, with sources claiming the pair have been flirting for weeks. The newspaper states that things came to a head after they were dared to kiss by their fellow hopefuls at a London hotel last week – with Ella and George seen ‘holding hands’ and apparently texting each other.

X Factor bosses have been accused of interfering with the judging process after a producer was seen talking to Louis Walsh during last night’s elimination performances. Carolynne Poole was eventually sent home from the competition after Walsh decided to go to deadlock. She had received fewer public votes than the other contestant in the bottom two, Rylan Clark. Her mentor Gary Barlow stormed off set, apparently furious with the decision. Meanwhile, the studio audience booed at the outcome and Rylan Clark started trending on Twitter. After the show, Walsh said he thought going to deadlock was the fairest option. “I was torn. I think Rylan’s a great entertainer and Carolynne’s a great singer. “I couldn’t make up my mind. So, finally, I decided that the fairest thing to do was to go to the public vote and Rylan had more votes than Carolynne. “It was sad but it was the fairest option.”

First Results Show – In Review
A very dramatic first results show started with all of the contestants singing a version of ‘Read All About It’. There were then guest appearances from, former winner, Leona Lewis and then Ne-Yo. Then Dermot revealed the results of the public vote. All the contestants went through except Rylan and Carolynne who polled the lowest amount of public votes. They then had to each sing before the judges made the decision of who to keep and send home. Nicole obviously decided to keep her act Rylan and Gary opted to save his act Carolynne, saying Rylan’s performance made it an easy decision for the judges. Next it was Tulisa who chose to save Carolynne. Louis had to then make a choice, if he saved Rylan then it would send the vote to Deadlock. Louis seemed very confused and seemed to agonise over who to save. An increasingly angry Dermot kept demanding an immediate decision. Louis then chose to save Carolynne, Dermot was unclear as to what he had said and asked Louis to clarify. Louis then said he wanted to send it to deadlock. So the vote then reverted back to the public vote. Dermot announced that the act with the fewest votes and going home is Carolynne. Her mentor Gary was outraged and stormed out of the studio. Rylan survives and will return on next week’s live show.
First Live Show – In Review
The X Factor live shows returned tonight and after a jig from Dermot it was straight to the drama as the public vote for the Wildcard was revealed. Gary’s wildcard Christopher Maloney was revealed as the last contestant for the live shows. The theme for the first live show was Heroes, featuring music inspired by the Olympic heroes of 2012. A lot of Team GB were also in the audience. The newly named group District 3 (formally GMD 3) opened the show. This was followed by a rather random appearance from, former contestants, One Direction who spoke to Dermot about their success. Stand-out performances were from Ella, Jahmene, MK1, Melanie and Lucy who, for the first time ever, was allowed to sing her own song. James also did very well and all except Gary seemed to like him. Union J didn’t have a very good night and was criticised by the judges, even their mentor Louis agreed it was a wrong song choice. Rylan had a mixed reception but Gary made no bones about the fact he doesn’t like him, saying he is “embarrassed” that he is on the show and he told Nicole she should be ashamed for putting him through. The results will be revealed on Sunday’s show where there will be guest performances from Leona Lewis and Ne-Yo.
Half of this year’s 12 X Factor finalists were approached to audition for the show. A spokesperson for the show told Newsbeat all acts had to go through the same process but that some had been asked by researchers to take part. Producers insist that the judges did not know whether acts had been invited to audition when they were deciding whether to send them through. A new rule was introduced this year to help producers find new talent. It was included in the terms and conditions for this year’s online application. It stated: “Please note that outside of this application process, acts may also be invited to audition for the programme by researchers acting on behalf of the producer. “Such acts will be required to go through the audition process and normal programme rules will apply.” Former Pussycat Doll, Nicole Scherzinger, who is mentoring the boys, said the move to invite contestants was now necessary due to the number of talent shows on TV, including The Voice.

Four X Factor acts have been given one more chance to reach the live shows. A wildcard act from each category has been selected by the judges to battle it out to be chosen as the talent show’s 13th finalist. Christopher Maloney from the Overs and Adam Burridge of the Boys will face off against Amy Mottram from the Girls and Times Red of the Groups. Dermot O’Leary confirmed that the four acts will go up for a public vote all week, with the most popular artist joining the other finalists at next week’s first live show (October 6).

The final 12 acts for The X Factor have been confirmed. The finalists were revealed in tonight’s (September 30) second Judges’ Houses episode, which saw the four judges reveal which acts were successful. Nicole Scherzinger was joined by Ne-Yo in selecting her final three, and chose Rylan Clark, James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas in her Boys category. Tulisa Contostavlos – helped by Tinie Tempah – went for Jade Ellis, Lucy Spraggan and Ella Henderson for the Girls. Melanie Masson, Kye Sones and Carolynne Poole were chosen by Gary Barlow for the Overs, with assistance from Cheryl Cole. Finally, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne kept GMD3, MK1 and Union J in the Groups category. Gary Barlow said of the final list of contestants: “This year we really have got the cream of the crop with our finalists and it was tough for all of us to choose our three acts. The standard of talent has gone up this year and I think it’s the best ever line-up of finalists. “The live shows will feel very different this year too as contestants can sing their own songs and play guitar – I can’t wait for Saturday!” Four acts were also revealed to be among this year’s Wildcard contestants, with each judge giving one artist in their category an extra chance of making the live shows. Christopher Maloney (Overs), Adam Burridge (Boys), Amy Mottram (Girls) and Times Red (Groups) will go up against each other in a public vote that will continue until next Saturday’s live show, with the winning act performing alongside the other 12 finalists. The X Factor continues with its first live show on Saturday, October 6 at 8pm on ITV.

She won last year with Little Mix after mentoring the groups category and Tulisa Constavlos believes she can win the X Factor for the second year in a row. The 24-year-old singer was thrilled to learn she had landed the girls. Simon Cowell made a brief return to the UK show, calling the judges to inform them which categories they had got and Tulisa couldn’t stop screaming when she learned she would be supporting the females. She gushed ‘Before, I said to myself there is no way I can win two years in a row, never going to happen. But my category is so strong that it’s actually possible.’ Gary Barlow was given the over 28’s, Nicole Scherzinger took the boys while Louis Walsh was handed the groups. The Take That singer and writer seemed pleased with the mature group of singers and said: ‘Oh wow. Brilliant! That is good news to my ears.’ ‘I feel like in recent years, the overs has become a bit of a joke category and I really want to restore what the overs should be this year. There are people over 28 with talent!’

The judges’ homes contestants will go on to compete in one last audition next weekend before the final 12 are chosen. Just six acts remain in each of the four categories, and the judges had to make some tough decisions when deciding who made the cut. But for others it was joy, with Jade Ellis making the cut despite forgetting her lines at bootcamp.
The final 24 look like this…
James Arthur / Jahmene Douglas / Nathan Fagan-Gayle / Adam Burridge / Rylan Clark / Jake Quickenden
Ella Henderson / Amy Mottram / Jade Collins / Lucy Spraggan / Leanne Robinson / Jade Ellis

X Factor ratings fell below 8 million last night as the second audition show of the weekend was damaged by the Paralympics Closing Ceremony on Channel 4. The ITV1 talent show continued to struggle to find its usual bumper ratings figures and dropped to a total average audience of 7.85m (which included 462K on +1). An average of 7.39 million watched the auditions show, which featured performances from Eddy String and Lorna Bliss, live at 8pm. During the hour that the show went head-to-head with the Paralympics, the Simon Cowell entertainment format did just edge a victory. It attracted a peak audience of 7.5m, compared to 6.65m on Channel 4. However, the show’s figures represented another slip in viewing figures, with around 400k less watching the show compared with Saturday’s auditions.

Cheryl Cole is back on The X Factor. The secret plans were hatched by judge Gary Barlow behind Simon Cowell’s back. The sensational return of Chezza, 29, a judge herself until her failed switch to the US version last year, will see her help Gary mentor acts in later rounds. And The Sun can reveal it was all orchestrated by keeping supremo Cowell, 52, in the dark following the Geordie babe’s simmering feud with him for axing her in America. The pair have since patched things up but Barlow, 41, still kept her return to the show so top secret even his chums on the judging panel will be amazed by our revelation today. He deliberately fooled them into believing fellow Take That legend Robbie Williams was the one he had recruited for the judges’ houses stage of the talent contest which for him is at a stately home in Northants. Last night an X Factor source confirmed: “Only Gary’s intimate inner circle know. He hasn’t even discussed it with Simon or ITV bosses. It’s been seriously top secret stuff.

Ratings for the talent show’s ninth series have been considerably lower than last year’s run, only logging between 8-9 million, compared to 10 million plus in 2011. Cowell is apparently determined to turn around the slump in viewers and has been involved in tweaking this weekend’s double bill of shows. “He is sitting through the rough edits and changing bits and pieces where he feels they need it,” a source told The Mirror. “It’s the first time this year he will be really hands-on in the UK.”

Geri Halliwell is reportedly “highly unlikely” to become a full-time X Factor judge. The former Spice Girls singer was a guest judge for the first round of filmed auditions earlier this month. However, producers have stated that she failed to generate any chemistry with Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos. “Geri had a lot of energy and tried her hardest to make an impression,” a source told The Sun. “But you need chemistry with the other judges in spades if you are going to join the panel full-time.” Since Halliwell’s guest stint, Leona Lewis and Rita Ora have stepped in to sit on the judging panel.

Rod Stewart has reportedly signed up to guest judge The X Factor. Filmed auditions start in Liverpool on Wednesday but bosses are still searching for a permanent replacement for Kelly Rowland after Dannii Minogue rejected a £1m offer to return. Producers are said to be worried that it is too late to secure an A-list star like Katy Perry and fear they could end up with Sinitta on the judging panel. “Rod is a genuine living legend and exactly what the show needs. The details are still to be ironed out but it looks like he’ll be at the auditions next month in London and possibly Glasgow because of his Scottish heritage,” a source told The Mirror.

Dannii Minogue won’t be returning as a judge on The X Factor, a spokesperson for the show has confirmed. Talks about her comeback have ended less than a week before the audition process is due to begin. The 40-year-old was replaced last year by Kelly Rowland after filming clashed with her judging commitments on Australia’s Got Talent. Guest judges are being lined up for early auditions but producers are also looking for a permanent replacement. It’s hoped that a deal can be done in the coming days. Dannii Minogue was considering a return despite recent claims that she had an affair with Simon Cowell, the show’s creator.

And the show will welcome bands and artists who already have management deals but are not yet signed to record labels.

Gary Barlow will be back on the X Factor judging panel later this year. The singer, 41, told ITV the good news during negotiations this week. The use of an expletive by X Factor contestant Frankie Cocozza on a live results show on ITV1 last October was “unacceptable”, Ofcom has ruled. The broadcasting watchdog said the term had been “clearly audible to viewers” and expressed concern over the absence of “suitable” compliance procedures. The regulator said it had received 108 complaints about the 23 October show. Channel Television, the company that handles legal compliance for the show, said it regretted Cocozza’s outburst. In its defence, it said no-one on the production team had heard the offensive term when it was broadcast “due to the noise of the audience at that point in the show”. “Had we appreciated that the comment was audible to viewers, we would have asked [presenter] Dermot O’Leary to make an immediate apology,” Ofcom was told.
