2015 Brit Awards News

It was a BRIT Awards people will remember for a long time, and 5.76 million viewers tuned in for the ceremony on Wednesday night. As the stars took to the stage and the music industry honoured its biggest and best acts at the O2 Arena, fans across the nation were glued to their screens. The night saw the return of Ant & Dec, who were hosting the ceremony for the first time in 14 years – and this year’s bash was watched by one million MORE people than 2014’s bash. It didn’t quite match the viewing figures for the Great Comic Relief Bake Off – which was seen by an average of 6 million in the same slot – but it was still a shocking and exciting evening for fans. The biggest talking point from the show was arguably Madonna’s painful fall during her first performance at the BRITs for two decades.

After her fall during her Brits performance, Madonna became the talk of Twitter with “Madonna” and the hashtag #shefellover trending top worldwide. It appears the star lost her balance after a dancer in goat horns tugged at her ruby-lined cape. Madonna later posted on her Instagram saying “my beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I’m fine!” There is a clear pause in the song, so at least we all now know she was singing live.

Brits 2015 As It Happened
The 2015 Brit Awards at London’s O2 Arena started with Taylor Swift performing Blank Space. This years hosts Ant and Dec then took to the stage talking up the night after a very successful year for British artists both here and in America. The phone lines were then opened for the public to vote for the British Artist Video Of The Year Award. Orlando Bloom and Rita Ora were then asked to the stage to give out the first award which was for the British Male Solo Artist Award. The winner was Ed Sheeran who described the win as “a good start to the night”.

Jimmy Page was next on stage to present the award for Best British Group and the winners were Royal Blood. The Brighton band said “started the band for a bit of a laugh”. Sam Smith was next to perform and sang Lay Me Down. Ant and Dec then had a chat with Ed Sheeran at his table. Welcomed to the stage next was Lewis Hamilton and Ellie Goulding to present the award for Best International Female. The winner was Taylor Swift and this was her first ever Brit Award win, the singer said she was “so happy” and thanked all her British fans. Next on stage was, award winners, Royal Blood who performed Figure It Out. Ant and Dec then joined Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora at their table for a conversation.

Ant and Dec then joined Simon Cowell at his table for a quick chin-wag and cheekily gave him a tie as he wasn’t wearing one. Mark Ronson was next on stage to present the award for Best British Female Solo Artist. Paloma Faith won and it was her third win in total over the years, she was very teary and said she was “so moved” as she gave a very long speech. Ed Sheeran was next on stage and performed an acoustic version of Bloodstream. Sam Smith was Ant and Dec’s next choice for a chat as they joined him at his table.

Kim Kardashian took to the stage to present the award for the Global Success Award, Sam Smith won after selling millions of singles and albums worldwide in just a year. Kim then introduced her husband Kanye West to the stage. He clearly wasn’t told it was a family show as producers had to keep muting the sound to cover the swear words. Cara Delevingne presented the next award which was for Best International Male Solo Artist. The winner was Pharrell Williams who wasn’t at the bash and sent an acceptance speech video.

Next to perform were Take That who sang their new single Let In The Sun. Lisa Snowdon and Lionel Richie were next to present an award and it was for Best British Single. The winner was Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ track Uptown Funk. A nervous sounding Mark said he would share the award with Bruno. John Bishop took to the stage to present the award for Best International Group. The winners were The Foo Fighters and sent a video acceptance speech. The hosts then joined James Bay at his table for a natter. George Ezra was next on stage for his debut Brits performance, he sang Budapest.

Fern Cotton and Charli XCX were next on stage to present the award for Best British Breakthrough Act. Sam Smith was the winner, collecting his second award of the night. Paloma Faith was next to perform and sang Only Love Can Hurt Like This. Jimmy Carr and Karlie Kloss were next up to present the award for Best British Artist Video Of The Year. One Direction won with the single You And I. They weren’t at the awards as they are in Japan and Simon Cowell accepted the award on their behalf. Simon said “Sam, you can’t win everything tonight”. Ant and Dec then had another chat with some artists and chatted with Royal Blood, Alt-J and George Ezra.

Russell Crow was next on stage to present the award for Best British Album. The winner was Ed Sheeran with his album Multiply. It brings Ed’s Brit Award total to four. Ed paid credit to a great year for the British music industry. Closing the show this year was Madonna. She gave a vibrant and energetic performance of her new single Living For Love, all this after a huge wardrobe malfunction. After failing to un-tie her cape quick enough it dragged her backwards down some stairs as one of her dancers pulled it away. She looked shaken and in pain to start with but quickly got back into the routine. Well she did promise a show-stopper.

His most recent album had a saviour-inspired name. So it’s perhaps fitting that Kanye West has been revealed as the last-minute addition to the BRIT Awards line-up – after Rihanna suddenly pulled out. The Yeezus star was formally announced as the ceremony’s headline act on Wednesday morning, just hours before the show is scheduled to take place in central London. The surprise move comes after the annual awards bash was plunged into chaos following the S&M singer’s random no-show at rehearsals on Monday.

A source close to the star told The Mirror: “Madonna wants to perform to the biggest number of people for the maximum impact and there’s no better place for a controversy-filled Madonna performance than the Brits.”

Despite saying he’s “hysterical” about his band’s two nominations, Clean Bandit’s Milan Neil Amin-Smith tells Newsbeat he’s not too comfortable with “all white boys” leading the way. “It seems a bit weird and a problem,” he says. Having referenced Kwabs and MNEK as notable black male artists from the last 12 months, Milan says: “It’s bizarre.” “The Oscars [nominees] were announced today and it was all white men doing everything. “I think there is something that needs talking about there.”

Es Devlin, who has created spectacular tours for Kanye West and Take That, is to design the stage for next year’s Brit Awards, organisers have announced. The British artist also designed the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, and recently won an Olivier Award for her work on Chimerica. The play, inspired by events in China’s Tiannenmen Square in 1989, had a rotating set described as a “theatrical Rubik’s cube”. The 2015 Brits will be on 25 February. The ceremony will be held at London’s O2 arena for the fifth year running – but host James Corden has stepped down. His replacement is yet to be announced.
