The Eurovision Song Contest 2024

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 was the 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Malmö, Sweden, following the country’s victory at the 2023. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT), the contest was held at the Malmö Arena, and consisted of two semi-finals on 7 and 9 May, and a final on 11 May. The three live shows were presented by Petra Mede and Malin Åkerman, with Mede having previously taken on the role in 2013 and 2016.

Thirty-seven countries participated in the contest, with Luxembourg competing for the first time since 1993, while Romania opted not to participate after doing so the previous year. The inclusion of Israel among the participants in the context of the Israel–Hamas war was met with controversy, and additional security measures were put in place for the event.

Switzerland won the combined vote and jury vote, and placed fifth in the televote. Croatia won the televote and finished in second place, marking its best result to date as an independent country. Ukraine, France, and Israel rounded out the top five.

UK Entry

Pop star Olly Alexander will represent the United Kingdom at 2024’s Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden. The former Years and Years frontman will hope to improve on the UK’s disappointing 2023 performance, when Mae Muller came second to last.

Alexander is already known around Europe for hits including Desire, King and If You’re Over Me. He is also a Bafta-nominated actor, having played the lead role in Channel 4’s hard-hitting Aids drama It’s A Sin. The star’s participation was revealed during the final of Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday, months before the BBC usually confirms its Eurovision plans.

“I love Eurovision so much, it’s a dream come true,” he told host Claudia Winkleman. “I’m just so, so excited.” In a press release, he added: “I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible. “I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!”

The song he will perform in Malmö next May is still under wraps – but it was co-written by Alexander and Danny L Harle, who has produced hits for Dua Lipa, Chic and Charli XCX. “It’s gonna be electronic, something you can dance to,” Alexander told BBC News. “But I can’t say much more than that. “I just can’t wait to get out there and meet the fans and everyone else taking part,” he added. “It’s going to be the wildest experience of my life.”
